When
I was 9 years old, my father bought me my first
guitar...a Harmony archtop. I
saved money from my paper route to buy my first electric
guitar. I started a rock band that
stayed together 10 years. But what I really loved
was jazz guitar...Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Johnny
Smith, all the greats plus the local players I learned so much
from like Rodney Stephensen, Don Hemminger, and
John Justus. By age 20, I had over 2,500 jazz guitar
albums in my collection. Once I got busy earning a
living, music became secondary. I played Rusty's Jazz Club
in
Toledo with the Tuesday Night Big Band and a guitar duo
on Sunday with my friend Ken
Johnson. But once Life's routine set in, jazz
guitar got squeezed out. I
didn't play for almost 20 years. As my
guitars gathered dust,
I realized that something was missing
in my life. In 2000, I
bought a home in Sedona, and
started playing again. I could now afford the instruments I always desired.
Great instruments and the time to indulge in my passion
brought a new aspect to my life. Then, in 2003, I
met Jack Petersen. Jack has been called the
greatest living jazz guitar educator in the world.
Jack started the guitar program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston
and several other colleges. Jack "retired"
near Sedona in 2003 and is playing more than ever.
Many of the world's greatest jazz guitarists all studied with
Jack! Jack and I have become great friends and he
played for my wedding January 1, 2005. The pictures
on this page are dedicated to my love for the art of jazz
guitar and my respect for the masters of this art. If jazz
guitar is your passion, I recommend Just Jazz Guitar magazine
